Updated October 10, 2026MSP Google Ads judged on booked calls, not clicks.
Most MSP ad budgets leak to job seekers, DIY searches and other MSPs shopping for software. I build and manage Google Ads for MSPs that reach business owners ready to talk, and prove it with tracked calls.

What are MSP Google Ads?
MSP Google Ads are pay-per-click search campaigns that put a managed service provider at the top of Google when local businesses search for IT support. Done well, they target buyer searches like “managed IT services [city],” exclude job seekers and DIY searches, send each click to a matching landing page, and are optimized for booked discovery calls rather than clicks.
Why you shouldn’t bid on “MSP”
“MSP” is industry shorthand. Your buyers rarely use it. A dental office manager searches for “IT support,” not “MSP.” Meanwhile the acronym pulls in other MSPs, software vendors, and searches about the Minneapolis–Saint Paul airport.
The searches that bring in clients describe the problem or the service in plain words.
Run a search-terms review
The search terms report shows the actual searches your ads appeared for. Here’s a typical sample from an MSP account. Run the review to see where the money went.

A starter negative keyword list for MSPs
Negative keywords stop your ads from showing for searches that will never become clients. Google puts it simply: “Negative keywords let you exclude search terms from your campaigns.” Start with these, then add more from your own search-terms report.

How an MSP Google Ads account should be structured
Tight themes from campaign to landing page. Each layer narrows the message, so the page a visitor lands on answers exactly what they searched.
The most common mistake is sending every ad to the homepage. A search for “cybersecurity services for small business” should land on a cybersecurity page with a matching headline, not a generic page listing twelve services. If you don’t have those pages yet, MSP website design covers how to build them.
Keyword match types, explained for MSPs
Match types control how closely a search must match your keyword. Here’s each one in Google’s words, and how I use it on MSP accounts.
Exact match
“Ads may show on searches that have the same meaning or same intent as the keyword.”
The tightest control. Ideal for your proven, highest-intent searches.
Start herePhrase match
“Ads may show on searches that include the meaning of your keyword.”
More reach while keeping the core meaning. Needs regular search-term reviews.
Expand with careBroad match
“Ads may show on searches that are related to your keyword.”
Widest reach. Only worth testing once conversion tracking is reliable and budget allows.

What a strong MSP search ad looks like
Same budget, same keyword. The difference is whether the ad speaks to the buyer.
- Could be any company in America
- No location, no audience, no proof
- “Contact us” gives no reason to act
- Matches the search and the city
- Specific promises a buyer can compare
- A clear, low-risk next step
Example ads. Only advertise promises, like response times, that you actually deliver.
Track what matters: from click to client
Google’s bidding learns from the conversions you tell it about. Count every form fill as a success and it will happily find you more spam. Feed it qualified leads and booked calls, and it learns what a real MSP prospect looks like.
- Ad clickSomeone clicked. Tells you nothing about intent.Don’t optimize for
- Form fill or callA real lead, but some will be spam or poor fits.Track always
- Qualified leadMarked as a fit in your CRM or PSA after review.Import to Google
- Booked discovery callA meeting is on the calendar.Optimize for
- Signed clientNew monthly recurring revenue.Measure ROI on
Qualified leads and closed deals can be sent back from your CRM using offline conversion imports (Google Ads Help).
MSP Google Ads lead cost calculator
Work out what a new client really costs from ads, and what they’re worth. The starting numbers are only examples, so replace them with your own.
Your monthly results
Revenue, not profit. A rough model for planning, not a forecast. Real results depend on your market, offer and follow-up.
Where LinkedIn Ads fit
Google Ads catch people already searching. LinkedIn Ads reach decision-makers who aren’t searching yet, by job title, company size and industry. Clicks usually cost more, so they work best for specific goals.
- Targeting a defined list of companies or industries
- Promoting a webinar, guide or security assessment
- Retargeting people who visited your site from Google
- Larger deals where one client justifies a higher cost per lead
How I manage MSP Google Ads
- Audit or build. Review your account and website in the free audit, or build a clean structure from scratch.
- Tracking first. Calls, forms and booked meetings tracked before serious budget goes live.
- Landing pages that match. Each campaign points to a page written for that search.
- Weekly search-term reviews. Negatives added and budget moved to what produces calls.
- Monthly reporting. Cost per qualified lead and cost per booked call, in plain English.
- Your account, always. Billing and data stay in your name.
MSP Google Ads questions
How much should an MSP spend on Google Ads?
Enough to get meaningful data, which depends on what clicks cost in your market. Rather than picking a number first, work backwards from what a new client is worth and what you can afford to pay to win one. The calculator on this page does exactly that with your own numbers.
Why are my MSP Google Ads getting clicks but no leads?
Usually one of three things: the ads are triggering for job seekers, DIY searches or other MSPs; the landing page doesn’t match the search; or calls and forms aren’t being tracked, so Google can’t learn what a good lead looks like.
Should I bid on the keyword “MSP”?
Rarely. Business owners searching for IT help usually search “managed IT services,” “IT support company” or “outsourced IT,” not “MSP.” The acronym mostly attracts other MSPs, vendors and unrelated meanings like the Minneapolis airport.
How long before Google Ads work for an MSP?
Ads can produce clicks on the first day, but expect a few weeks of search-term cleanup, negative keywords and conversion data before cost per lead settles. Judge results on qualified calls over a couple of months, not on the first week.
Are Google Ads or SEO better for MSPs?
Google Ads deliver leads now but stop when spending stops. SEO builds slowly but keeps working. Many MSPs use ads to fill the pipeline while SEO grows, then rebalance budget as organic leads increase.
Do you need access to my Google Ads account?
Yes, as a user on your account. The account, billing and all the data stay in your name, so you keep everything if we ever stop working together.
